Good reporting often starts with someone noticing that a public claim, local decision, dataset or lived experience deserves closer attention.

Use the news-tip form for an ordinary story lead. News-tip tickets are reserved for human handling and are not sent to the support AI.

What makes a useful tip

Tell us, in your own words:

• What happened or is expected to happen.
• Who is involved and how you know.
• Where and when it happened.
• What part is already public and what needs verification.
• Which documents, datasets, public records or witnesses could support it.
• Why the matter is important to readers.
• How an editor may contact you, if you want a reply.

Specific, checkable details are more useful than a conclusion alone. Separate what you witnessed from what someone else told you. If a public web page supports the lead, include its URL.

The tip form does not accept file uploads. Describe the material and how an editor could verify it; do not paste secrets, identity documents, medical records, passwords, access keys or large amounts of personal data into the form.

You may also use the published [email protected] address for ordinary email. Standard email is not an end-to-end encrypted disclosure channel.

Anonymous is not the same as untraceable

The tip form allows the display name “Anonymous” and does not require an email address. The service still records limited technical information, including a protected representation of the network address, for security and abuse prevention. Hosting providers and networks also create ordinary technical records.

For that reason, the form is not suitable for a source who needs strong technical anonymity. A private ticket link is issued after submission; keep it secret because its ticket ID and access key allow access to the conversation.

Confidential or high-risk disclosures

Daily Junction does not currently publish a dedicated end-to-end encrypted drop box or a SecureDrop address. Do not send high-risk confidential material through the web form or standard email if disclosure could endanger you, another person or an investigation.

We will take a request for confidentiality seriously, but we cannot promise absolute anonymity, legal privilege or protection from a lawful demand. Consider independent legal or specialist source-protection advice before sharing sensitive material.

Do not break the law, enter private systems, impersonate someone, trespass or place yourself at risk to obtain information for us. A tip is more useful when its provenance can be explained lawfully.

What happens to a tip

An editor may assess whether the lead is relevant, credible, safe and capable of verification. We may compare it with documents, contact people named in it or decide not to pursue it. Sending a tip does not guarantee a reply, investigation, payment or publication.

If we pursue the story, we may need to discuss how you know the information and whether any part can be attributed. Do not assume that silence means the material is being investigated.

Use another route when appropriate

• Use the correction form for a factual error in an existing Daily Junction article.
• Use the safety report form for abuse, threats, private information or dangerous content on Daily Junction.
• Use content help for a question about finding, understanding or reusing our content.
• If someone is in immediate danger, contact emergency services instead of waiting for a newsroom reply.
